Statement on Leicester Community Tensions

We Stand Together with the leaders of Leicester's Hindu and Muslim Communities who, yesterday, called for an, "immediate cessation of provocation and violence - both in thought and behaviour. We together call upon the inciters of hatred to leave our city alone."

We support all those working for an end to the conflict in Leicester.

We support their message that, "We are a strong family, we will work together to resolve whatever concern may arise - we do not need to call up any assistance from outside our city. Leicester has no place for any foreign extremist ideology that causes division."

We all live in a diverse society that strives to build bridges and friendships so that all can experience mutual flourishing as people who share a common desire to live in peace. We deplore any violence and encourage the work of all peacemakers.

We recognise that, as the leaders in Leicester made clear, these two faiths have lived harmoniously in Leicester for over half a century; faced the same challenges together; fought off racist haters together and collectively made the city a beacon of diversity and community cohesion. We look forward to their success in re-establishing these harmonious relationships swiftly and again showing Leicester to be a strong, safe and cohesive community for all. Let us live alongside each other in peace and harmony.
